Flange Facing Types – RF, FF & RTJ

Understanding Flange Faces for Piping Connections

The flange face is the sealing surface where the flange connects with a gasket and another mating component. The correct flange facing helps create a reliable connection and should be selected according to the piping system, pressure, temperature, gasket arrangement and applicable standard.

Vandan Alloys supplies industrial flanges with different facing configurations, including Raised Face (RF), Flat Face (FF) and Ring Type Joint (RTJ), according to customer specifications and applicable standards.

Raised Face Flanges – RF

Raised Face (RF) is one of the most commonly used flange facing configurations.

The sealing surface is raised above the main flange face, creating a defined area for gasket installation.

RF flanges are widely used in:

  • Process piping

  • Refineries

  • Petrochemical plants

  • Chemical industries

  • Power plants

  • General industrial piping

  • Oil & gas applications

Raised Face flanges can be supplied in different materials, sizes and pressure classes depending on the project requirement.

Flat Face Flanges – FF

Flat Face (FF) flanges have a flat sealing surface without a raised portion.

Flat Face configurations are commonly selected where the mating equipment or piping connection requires a full flat sealing surface.

FF flanges are used in various:

  • Low-pressure piping systems

  • Water applications

  • Utility piping

  • Industrial equipment connections

  • Piping systems where flat-face mating is specified

The gasket selection and mating flange arrangement should always be considered when using a Flat Face flange.

Ring Type Joint Flanges – RTJ

Ring Type Joint (RTJ) flanges use a specially machined groove designed to accommodate a metallic ring gasket.

RTJ connections are generally selected for applications where a highly reliable metal-to-metal sealing arrangement is required under demanding operating conditions.

Typical applications include:

  • High-pressure piping

  • High-temperature service

  • Oil & gas facilities

  • Refineries

  • Petrochemical plants

  • Power generation

  • Critical process piping

RTJ flange dimensions and groove details must match the specified standard and corresponding ring gasket.

RF vs FF vs RTJ

The three common facing configurations serve different connection requirements.

RF – Raised Face:
A raised sealing area provides a defined gasket seating surface and is widely used for industrial piping.

FF – Flat Face:
A flat sealing surface is used where the piping or equipment arrangement calls for a full flat mating face.

RTJ – Ring Type Joint:
A precision-machined ring groove accommodates a metallic ring gasket and is commonly selected for demanding pressure and temperature service.

The correct selection depends on the complete piping design rather than flange facing alone.

Flange Face & Gasket Compatibility

Flange facing and gasket selection should be considered together.

A gasket must be suitable for the flange face configuration, pressure, temperature, fluid service and applicable piping specification.

Using an incorrect gasket or mismatched facing arrangement can affect sealing performance.

For this reason, customers should specify the required face type and gasket arrangement when ordering flanges.

Flange Face Finish

The sealing surface finish is an important part of flange performance.

The required finish can depend on the flange facing type, gasket type, applicable standard and customer specification.

Machining is carried out to achieve the required surface characteristics and dimensional requirements.

RTJ Groove Machining

RTJ flanges require accurate machining of the ring groove.

The groove dimensions, geometry and location must correspond with the specified RTJ configuration and mating ring gasket.

For this reason, RTJ flanges should be manufactured and inspected with particular attention to the groove profile, dimensions and surface condition.

Flange Facing & Pressure Class

Flange facing is not selected independently from pressure class.

Flanges can be supplied in various pressure classes such as:

Class 150, Class 300, Class 600, Class 900, Class 1500 and Class 2500, subject to the applicable standard and flange size.

The required facing, dimensions and pressure rating should always be confirmed from the applicable flange specification.

Common Flange Types Available with Different Faces

Depending on the design and standard, facing configurations can be supplied with flange types such as:

Weld Neck Flanges, Blind Flanges, Slip-On Flanges, Socket Weld Flanges, Threaded Flanges, Lap Joint Flanges, Long Weld Neck Flanges and Orifice Flanges.

The availability of a particular face configuration depends on the flange type, size, pressure class and applicable standard.

Flange Standards

Flanges and their facing configurations can be supplied according to applicable international standards, including:

ASME B16.5, ASME B16.47, EN 1092-1, DIN, JIS and BS standards.

The correct standard should be specified according to the project requirement.

How to Specify a Flange Face

When sending an enquiry, providing the following information helps avoid confusion:

Flange Type + Size + Material Grade + Pressure Class + Standard + Facing + Quantity

For example:

4" WNRF Flange – ASTM A182 F316L – Class 600 – ASME B16.5 – RF

or

6" Blind Flange – ASTM A105 – Class 300 – ASME B16.5 – RF

For RTJ requirements, the required RTJ configuration should also be clearly identified.

Inspection of Flange Facing

Before dispatch, flange faces can be checked for relevant dimensional and machining requirements.

Inspection may include:

  • Face dimensions

  • Face condition

  • Flange thickness

  • Bore

  • Outside diameter

  • Bolt hole dimensions

  • PCD

  • RTJ groove dimensions, where applicable

Inspection requirements are based on the applicable standard, approved drawing and purchase specification.
